Early in my career I had a fantastic manager who would keep on asking “what are we managing to”? I hadn’t heard this asked before and it took me a while to understand what his question really was about. Weren’t we all trying to build a great company and trying to get things done? What do you mean what are we managing to? We have a ton of work and it’s all critical so why are we asking such a silly question? It took me a while but I’ve found this concept of “managing to” to be a foundational and critical component to strong leadership and management.
